Density

Density, unfortuantely, has a strong negative connotation for many people, which keeps planners and decision-makers from taking steps toward more compact development.  However, density done right can provide many public benefits - allowing people to "live, work, eat, and play" all in the same place, and protecting other areas for their environmental and recreational values.  The Lincoln Insitute of Land Policy has developed an eye-opening presentation on Visualizing Density.  Check it out for yourself - it may change the way you think about density!
