Developer Fees Raised

PeaceRaleigh City Council voted today to raise fees developers must pay for the processing of their development plans. Why? With rapid growth comes a lot of new development.  Cities have to approve development and building plans, so developers help pay for those municipal services.  A recent study showed that fees in Raleigh are much lower than other peer cities like Austin and Charlotte which is why the City has proposed higher fees to cover the costs.  WakeUP has always said that growth should help pay for the costs of growth, so WakeUP’s Executive Director spoke at the public hearing Feb 21 in support of raising the fees.  The City’s proposal would ensure that developers pay for 100% of commercial development processing costs and about 89% for residential, to help keep costs down for new housing.  To promote the building the of affordable housing, perhaps the City could consider waiving development fees if some affordable housing is built.  Learn more here…
